“Hockey IQ gives every player a chance to be the best they can be. It’s not just about skill or being the fastest guy on the ice. Thinking the game smarter gives you the best chance to succeed.”
— Michael McCarron
Michael McCarron’s story starts the way a lot of great ones do, on the rinks around Grosse Pointe, Michigan, with a kid who idolized the Red Wings of the Yzerman era and modeled his game after Darren McCarty, a player who could score, stand up for teammates, and win Cups doing both. He came up through the Honeybaked program in Detroit and then earned a spot with the U.S. National Team Development Program, a jump he later described as the moment hockey went from three practices a week to a full time life of six and seven day weeks and twelve hour days. He has called it a pivotal stretch in his life, and the habits he built there are the ones that carried him for the next decade.
That work got noticed. Montreal selected him in the first round, 25th overall, in 2013, and GM Marc Bergevin encouraged him to sharpen his game in major junior rather than take his college commitment to Western Michigan. He played for Dale Hunter in London, where he says he learned real lessons about professionalism, then went to Oshawa and won a Memorial Cup, scoring more than 20 goals in each of his two junior seasons. On winning it, he put it simply: “Everyone views you as a champion”.
What makes McCarron’s career genuinely impressive is what came next. Rather than wait for the scoring role he was drafted into, he went and built a second, more valuable version of himself. Over 292 games with Nashville he became a complete pro: a 6 foot 6 power forward who wins faceoffs, kills penalties, plays a heavy honest game, and looks after his teammates every night. Those are earned skills, not gifts, and they are exactly the skills that keep a player in the League.
Minnesota traded a second round pick for him at the 2026 deadline, and he made an immediate impression, locking down a regular role and quickly becoming one of the most respected voices in the room. In June 2026 the Wild rewarded him with a six year, $20 million contract, choosing continuity with a player who makes everyone around him better.
Hockey Therapy takeaway:
McCarron was drafted for one skill set and had to teach himself a completely different one (faceoffs, penalty killing, situational awareness) to stay in the League. Being a top pick isn’t the finish line. Understanding your role and reading the moment is what actually extends a career.
